It is a reference text, and certainly a first place to look for information on radioactivity analysis. I expect radioecologists and many other specialists who use radionuclides will find chapters here of use.

This second edition adds solid state nuclear track detection SSNTD ; radioisotope mass spectrometry; automated radiochemical separation, analysis and sensing; radioactive counting statistics and radiation dosimetry.

The SSNTD are especially interesting as they are low cost, allowing analysis in labs that are not equipped with the more expensive analytical machinery. It is always useful to be refreshed on the implications of the Compton effect and Bremsstrahlung radiation.

This sets the stage for the next 12 chapters that deal with detection systems. Buchtela describes gas ionization detectors in chapter 2 55 pages. This is of particular interest to me as this technique has expanded the scope of radioecology by making analysis more affordable and accessible.
