Sally Thorne. Editorial Reviews Review "Literally one of the most unique novels I have ever read. It was intense, romantic, dangerous and touching.
It's dark, unique and addictive. I demand more, Mya! I read it without taking a break, staying up too late to finish it. It was an engrossing, original and at times, heart breaking story.
They have the potential to open the door for some amazing personal inventory.

I applauded the truth bombs dropped throughout the book about a female's value being more than the condition of her hymen. I honestly couldn't have loved this book more. It was so well built, it felt natural! I wish I could read more about them. I did not think one should care so much about being a virgin, and thought I knew what was going to happen- no I was wrong. And I am both completely heartbroken and brilliantly captivated by the beauty of this book.
One I'm not going to forget so soon. I raced through it in the matter of a few days. I appreciated the way the author slowly revealed the main themes of this novel and more and more about the situations in the story as well.
Well written! Mya Robarts is a bookaholic who regrets nothing. She aspired to be a contemporary dance choreographer when she discovered a pull for expressing her choreography ideas in written form. Robarts is obsessed with books that present damaged characters, swoon-worthy guys, controversial topics and happy endings.

I am not certain, but I believe this is considered to be a young adult novel. If it is, I caution that, as I feel some of the subject matter is geared more toward an older audience.
Although, I know young minds may have the same questions, impulses, etc.

I still felt some images and events would be concerning for younger minds, at least those not equipped to deal with it. The two leads, Lila and Aleksey are wonderful, deep characters and their chemistry keeps the pages flying.
The world Robarts has created is also very interesting and thought provoking. I have never lived through a war, I hope I never have to, and I found the troubles and lifestyle Lila was presented with in this harsher, more dangerous setting intriguing to read.
Seeing how other characters are effected by the war as well, whether it's for the better or worse, all of it was deeply engaging. I highly recommend this novel if you like thought-provoking stories with a gradient of characters, good, bad, gray, what have you.
This novel is abound with them. I could not put this book down. Reading about the rapes was hard but readers were warned and they were not as graphic as I expected.
I loved the hero Aleksey. He falls head over heals with Lila and is faithful to her shortly after meeting her even though not a couple until near the end. It seemed to take forever before they were together and that was my only disappointment. I wanted them to together much sooner than they were and that included wanting them to make love sooner as well.
I loved when Aleksey's possessiveness and jealousy reared its head. It was hot.
It was heart breaking too when the idea of Lila being with Rey gutted him. Some readers were upset that Lila kept trying to be with her best friend Rey, to give him her v-card.
The closer it got to the ceremony the more desperate she was and she did not trust Aleksey. I do not blame her for trying to entice Rey.
She was afraid of being raped and non-virgins tended to be safe from being recruited. I too would do anything to stop that too. Also her and Aleksey were not together during her attempts.
Rey angered me. He wanted her and knew he could save her but kept getting cold feet. Also him thinking about OW during those attempts including calling out the OW name was irritating.
If he wanted her like he said he did and loved her like a friend then he would man up. I loved when Lila's sister put both Aleksey and Rey in their place when they were fighting over Lila. She is right in what she said and they both deserved to be reminded that neither of them were innocent or wronged parties. It was heart breaking to me what happened to a secondary character and what he did as a result of that occurring to him.
Based on what was shown about his character and personality, I think it was unlike he would react to the trauma in the way he did. I liked the ending. Very Intense. This was an intense read! The subject matter of rape is difficult to bare, but mass rapings? By Soldiers? And those who are supposed to protect you? Even harder to bare. It was, dare I say, very refreshing, despite the subject matter.
But let me clarify. Lila is a young girl growing up during a time of Civil War modern times.
She fears recruitment from The Patriots, who are scheduled to come to her town very soon. Part of the recruitment ceremony involves legal mass rapings of the forced recruits. Potential recruits are discouraged from fleeing, hiding, or committing suicide, as their families will pay the price of defiance. Lila wants to have sex and lose her virginity on her own terms, not under recruitment.
While this all sound corny, I assure you it is not. Lila is a very mature, opinionated, moral, strong, assertive female character.
Aleksey, a General of the UNNO who are supposed to protect civilians, and remain neutral between the Patriots and The Nationalists, is the epitome of who Soldiers and civilians alike fear. But his exterior belies his true nature, and Lila grows to know him.
This is an unconventional love story in the midst of social commentary. It sounded too made up and I kinda rolled my eyes at it.
But apparently, shit like this happened during REAL times of war in our country, and others, I imagine. The fear of rape among women was very real. That is background and not much detail is given about the where, why, and hows. The focus is on Lila and Aleksey. Not light-hearted topics.
Yet it is weaved into a thought provoking and sensual story. I read this book every morning before work and when I got home and the times in between, I found myself constantly thinking about the story. Even the romance. But the current leader of the rebellion sucks at it. This is refreshing. Lila will have to learn how to use everyday objects as guns and will have to do what she can to become stronger.
I admire her so much because of this. I'd live in hiding. Aleksy is fantastic You'll find what I'd call an I-want-to-use-you triangle here. In terms of steamy scenes, I think that they were well written and sexy. Some are rough, some are sweet, some are graphic but all are realistic and vital to the plot or the overall message of the book.
I enjoyed them all! For example this quote Why does it have to hurt only me? Why sexuality is always more difficult for women than for men. Not fair.Abi Ketner. Why did you choose these platforms? She gets irritated with Aleksey who thinks her plans are quite ridiculous and he wants to make a deal with her in exchange for an alternative to her plans. When he lays eyes on Jamie, he sees a kindred spirit. All I want is to leave my crime-ridden shadow of a home in New York City. An awkward, rather comical, first meeting ensures that he won't soon forget Lila.
I love how strong and capable Lila is both physically and mentally. Susan Ee. I appreciated the way the author slowly revealed the main themes of this novel and more and more about the situations in the story as well. The subject matter of rape is difficult to bare, but mass rapings?
